Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to question specific decisions from the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
