Jennifer Lawrence Expresses Discussing Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Tearing the Nation Apart
Lawrence has expressed that she finds it inappropriate appropriate to voice opinions countering the Trump presidency, worried it could worsen unhelpful debate and further divisions across the United States.
‘I’m Unsure If It’s Wise’, Says the Actress
In a recent interview, the Oscar winner commented, “When Trump was first in office, I believed I was acting frantically without clear direction. But it’s become clear, through repeated campaigns, celebrities have no real impact whatsoever on voter decisions.”
She continued, “What’s the point? I’m just expressing personal views on an issue that’s going to heighten conflict tearing the country apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Jennifer Lawrence has previously been open about backing Republican and Democratic presidential nominees over the years. Raised by Republican parents in her home state, she supported the Republican nominee in 2008 prior to switching to the Democratic party and stating she realized during President Obama’s term that voting Republican was undermining her own rights as a woman.
Previous Comments
Earlier in her career, she commented that a Trump victory could represent “a catastrophic event” and backed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election. More recently, she voiced her backing to the Democratic nominee, “since I believe she’s an amazing candidate and I know that she will do whatever she can to defend reproductive rights.”
Industry Position
Jennifer Lawrence was supported by most of Hollywood in her opposition to Trump as a returning figure, but the limited influence public figures have over the electoral decisions was emphasized by his election win.
“This upcoming term seems distinct,” commented she about his leadership. “Since he stated his intentions. We knew what he did for four years. He was transparent. And that’s what we chose.”
Latest Film
The actor is currently promoting Die, My Love, the filmmaker’s drama in which she portrays a recent parent who struggles with her mental health in rural Montana. Speaking at a press conference for the film in the film festival, Lawrence commented on Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s mortifying. What’s happening is no less than a atrocity and it’s terrible.”
Broader Concerns
She continued by saying that she was saddened by “the lack of civility in the discourse of American politics right now and how that is going to be accepted to the younger generation today. It’s going to be typical to them that politicians lie.”
Lawrence sought to redirect outrage about the issue to decision-makers rather than entertainers. “Stay focused on who is responsible,” she advised, in what many took to be a nod to the then-recent pledge endorsed by numerous Hollywood professionals to boycott Israeli film institutions.
Individual Insights
Lawrence, who earned critical acclaim early in her career for her role in the acclaimed film, is receiving praise for her portrayal in Die, My Love. While the director has denied the plot being interpreted as one of postpartum depression and psychosis, she revealed that she identified with parts of her role’s experience after the arrival of her youngest child, shortly after filming concluded.
“There was concern for my son,” she said, “envisioning every potential danger, and then second-guessing everything that I was trying. I was already in therapy, but I started taking a medication called the prescription and I used it for 14 days and it made a difference.”
Career Moments
The actor also spoke regarding the freeing requirement of shooting revealing sequences in the movie while she was in pregnancy and limited physically.
“There’s a freedom,” she said, of being forced to cast off vanity. “Truly, I sometimes think where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between me and a prostitute? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
